Covenant University and a foremost national daily in Nigeria, Punch Newspaper, have agreed to work together in the promotion of entrepreneurship development among students of the institution and people in the society at large.
That was the resolve as representatives of Punch Newspaper led by the Editor, Saturday Punch, Mrs. Olabisi Deji-Folutile, on Monday, April 24, 2017, presented copies of a book on entrepreneurial development to the Management of Covenant University.
Mrs. Deji-Folutile, who was accompanied on the visit by the newspaper’s Education Correspondent, Mr. Babatunde Ajaja, said that having been in existence for more than three decades championing the cause of the masses, supporting businesses and building an egalitarian society, Punch Newspaper realized it had to do more, especially in the area of promoting entrepreneurship studies in the nation’s universities.
While acknowledging the pioneering role played by Covenant University in entrepreneurship development, she stated that her organisation realised the imperative of publishing a book to boost entrepreneurship development.
“We decided to compile columns we’ve been running for five years on entrepreneurial finance and personal development, which is our own corporate social responsibility. We hope it will help our graduates to be aware of the likely challenges they’ll face post-university. They will learn from mistakes of the past, and we hope universities will encourage students to read the book and see what they can get from it,” she said.
Punch Newspaper, she added, believes graduates should not be seeking employment but start something on their own.
In his comments, the Director, Centre for Entrepreneurial Development Studies, Covenant University, Dr. Stephen Oluwatobi, said that Punch’s presentation to the University was coincidental as the CEDS had identified the need to come up with contents to accelerate what it was doing.
Also, the Head, Department of Business Management, Dr. Oluwole Iyiola, who acknowledged the importance of information in any society, said that what Punch has come up with will boost what Covenant University has been doing.
The Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Professor AAA. Atayero, in his remarks, commended Punch Newspaper for initiating such an idea and the company’s kind gesture to the University.
The University, he said, has a Vision of becoming one of the top 10 universities in the world by the year 2022, but it’s no big deal for God to make it happen before then. God, he added, has decided to start doing it, and this is exemplified by the Punch Newspaper’s initiative.
Also at the meeting were the Acting Registrar, Mrs. Mary Aboyade; Director, Financial Services, Pastor Bayo Oladehinbo; Dean, School of Business and Social Sciences, Professor Francis Iyoha; Director, Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Dr. David Omole; Head, Department of Mass Communication, Dr. Lanre Amodu; Deputy Director, Media and Corporate Affairs, Mr. Emmanuel Igban; and a former Director, CEDS, Dr. Chinonye Love Moses.
