In a programme about Social Media, a statement calling students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko ‘Irresponsible’ was credited to the Ondo State First Lady, Arabinrin Betty-Akeredolu over which she has received an ultimatum.
It was learnt that the First Lady made the statement out of her encounter with some of the students who protested during the last fee hike in the institution.
The programme was held at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) to mark the Ondo State Social Media Day, where the First Lady was a guest alongside other dignitaries.
The ultimatum, however, was contained in a press statement by the Ajasin Varsity’s Students Union and signed by the President, Comrade Eyinla Temitope (Boubow) and Oyashina Oreoluwa (Orhe).
The statement reads:
“We the entire students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko seize this opportunity to draw the attention of the general public to a statement credited to the wife of the Ondo State Governor, Mrs. Betty Akeredolu at a programme in the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) over the weekend.”
It was also gathered from the statement that “sources present at the event confirmed that, Mrs Akeredolu labelled AAUA students as ‘very irresponsible’ based on her encounter with some of us during our peaceful protest against the astronomical tuition fees hike imposed on us by her husband. The statement was also confirmed by a well-known online news blog, nigeriancablenewsonline.com as well as students present at the event including the immediate past commissioner for youth in the state, Mr Dayo Awude.”
Recall that in April, AAUA students protested over the 200% increment in their tuition fee by the State Governor.
Comrade Eyinla, in the statement, maintained that students of AAUA are known for good character, academic excellence and such defamation should not have emanated from Mrs. Akeredolu.
“To set the records straight, it is a known fact that AAUA students are known for record of good conduct in behaviour, character and learning, as well as massive academic excellence. So for a public figure as ranked as the wife of the governor to have painted us in such a very bad light is not only delusional, but it is also a figment of her imagination because it is highly fictitious, we, therefore, urge her to desist from this business of labeling, defamation, calumny and deliberate assassination of our character as 21st century students properly called.”
He went further to talk about the Campaign Against Breast Cancer in the state (BRECAN INITIATIVE) which the First Lady is the crusader, asking if the students involved in such initiative are also irresponsible as quoted.
The union further expressed its disappointment over the First Lady’s statement, saying that it is a derogatory remark.
“With so many student-ambassadors among us who share in the ideology (Breast Cancer), does that mean they are also irresponsible? We are highly disappointed at her for uttering such derogatory remarks about us,” the union said through its statement.
The Union in its final resolution presented that Mrs. Akeredolu should tender an apology to the students.
It also threatened to take legal actions if the apology is not done within seven days.
“We wish to further reiterate and state emphatically, that we the entire students of AAUA including the seen and unseen forces of aluta radical militants, hereby demand an apology from the wife of the Ondo State Governor, Mrs. Betty Akeredolu within seven days, or we will be forced to take necessary legal actions,” the statement reads.
Some of the attendees at the programme revealed that Cameras and Videos were not allowed as the statement sparked reactions from students.
