By Muhammad Auwal Ibrahim,

Arojah Royal Theatre, a professional theatre outfit in Nigeria has held a one-day virtual playwriting master class for the maiden edition of the Arojah Students Playwriting Prize (TAPPS) 2020, on September 19, 2020.

The playwriting master class covered topics such as ‘Basic Element of Playwriting/Dramaturgy,’ ‘Basic Element of Playwriting for Advocacy,’ and ‘Basic Element of playwriting for young audiences,’

More than 20 participants were in attendance at the virtual playwriting master class.

The participants commended the exercise and spoke about their experience.

“It was a privilege having an interactive class with such theatre practitioners on the area of Playwriting. I enjoyed Makinde’s session and equally others except for the white woman due to her intonations. And I suppose, many of us had this challenge. It is therefore important for teachers to consider intonation in cross-border communication with students,” Anthony Echefunachukwu Ugwu, a student at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, said.

“On the topic, the Advocacy Drama, I learnt a lot on the importance of giving sincerity to such dramas through thorough research on the topic you are working on.”

“I must appreciate the organizer: the Arojah Royal Theatre. And the facilitators, and fellow participants, thank you.”

Another participant from the University of Benin, Adekeye Oluwasegun Lukman, said: “Well, I must say I really enjoyed the class and I saw it as a privilege for me to learn directly from professional writers from different countries.

“The experience I got today will definitely improve my writing skills as most things I learnt today, were something I  normally don’t take note of, or that I normally don’t pay attention to. I must say a big thanks to AROJAH Theater for the opportunity provided for we young Writers.”
