The Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Ogun State chapter, Bamgbose Tomiwa, in reaction to the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun’s directive to close down all schools in Ogun state has said that the closure of all schools isn’t the next step to take
He made this statement when speaking to our correspondent during an online interview.
He said, “Concerning the widespread of coronavirus, I think the public needs to join hands with the government in order to prevent this virus from spreading because we can see cases of countries where this virus is very rampant, we can see how it has grounded their activities, economically, financially and in other aspects so coronavirus is a virus that Nigeria must stand up to prevent from spreading”
“Well concerning the action of the government in the making sure that they shut down schools, well to me coronavirus in Nigeria is not as popular has the way it is been pronounced in other countries.”
“It is not yet as popular as that but nevertheless, that doesn’t mean that we need to fold our hands and wait till it gets popular among our people before necessary action is taken, but I think the closing down of schools is not necessary for now because the coronavirus is not as popular as what people publicize in Nigeria.”
While speaking on other measures the Government can take to tackle the fast-spreading Coronavirus, he said
“Some other necessary effort that should be put in place is that the government should set up health committee that will be located in major places in the state, all across the whole local government in order to be on the lookout for persons with the symptoms of coronavirus.”
“Then another thing is that the government should embark on wide sensitization about the coronavirus on ways which the spread can be prevented and the government should also encourage the use of hand sanitizer and if possible they should make available preventive things like hand sanitizer that can be used in order to prevent it for now. Closing the down the school is not the next step to take for now”
He, however, plans to embark on an awareness program in all tertiary institutions in the state
He said, “Raising the level of awareness among our students and bringing their notice to preventive measures on how to prevent themselves from the widespread, that is our agenda for next week”
“Creating awareness about it in our campuses and making sure that the student doesn’t serve as an agent of spreading such virus”
The federal government have however ordered that all schools be shut down till further notice
