As you are reading this, one of the Covenant University’s highly rated researchers, Professor Victor Chukwudi Osamor, is leading other world-class Data Scientists to provide a solution to “Characterising Protein Hydrophobicity Using High-Dimensional Descriptors” at the Material and Data Science Hackathon (MATDAT 18) taking place at the University of Pennsylvania, USA.
Professor Osamor, who is joined by another erudite researcher at Covenant University, Professor Emmanuel Adetiba, with other experts from around the world will attempt to characterise proteins and how they interact with water, particularly in the human body.
Speaking with the Media and Corporate Affairs of the University, just before he departed for the hackathon, Professor Osamor noted that the volume of data has increased beyond what a ‘normal’ scientist could handle, “That is why those of us that are computational science inclined can come in to provide solution to the problem,” he explained.
The professor of Computer Science with the speciality in Bioinformatics explained further that the event would be a platform to showcase Covenant University among the best in the world and would also strengthen its Data Science research base.
Professor Osamor is the current Head, Department of Computer and Information Sciences and the Coordinator, Centre for Information Technology (CIT) at Covenant University. He is also a visiting scholar (ERCIM/Marie Curie Fellow) at Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics, University of Warsaw (Universytet Warszawski), Poland.
