The Acting Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Mrs. Christy Ifeyinwa Uba has called on all stakeholders of the Scheme to give necessary encouragement to corps members.
Mrs. Uba made the call in her address read at the closing ceremony of the 2022 Batch ‘C’ (Stream II) orientation course held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ikare-Akoko.
The Acting Director General who was represented by the NYSC Ondo State Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani equally appealed to Corps Employers to accept corps members posted to them and make necessary provisions for their welfare.
She commended the patriotic zeal of the corps members as demonstrated by their active participation in camp activities and exhibition of high levels of discipline.
The most senior Director of the noble Scheme charged the members of the service corps to use social media responsibly towards self-improvement and warned against unauthorised journeys and night trips.
“Mass Media of Communication, most importantly the social media must be used for the promotion of unity, peace and development of our dear country. In the same vein, avoid being speculative on issues affecting the NYSC but instead, visit our website, social media platforms and other official channels for clarifications.”
On unauthorised journeys and night trips, the distinguished administrator said, ‘You are advised to cut short your trips from six o’clock in the evening and pass the night at NYSC Lodges, military barracks and other locations designated as safe’.
The first female to head the laudable Scheme in an acting capacity reminded the corps members of the Oath of Allegiance they took in which they pledged to accept the posting in good faith and enjoined them to perform their duties with diligence and be guided by the provisions of the NYSC Act and Bye,-Laws as well as workplace rules and regulations
She admonished them ‘to integrate into your host communities while also appreciating and respecting their cultures and desisting from meddling in their local politics’.
On Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, she encouraged the corps participants to build on the skills acquired and avail themselves the opportunities for post-camp training as this will go a long way in empowering them for self-reliance.
On the issue of security, the NYSC boss urged them to security conscious at all times and avoid acts that can endanger their lives such as staying out late, attending night parties, visitation to dangerous places and acceptance of car rides from strangers.
“Management remains committed to making adequate provisions for your welfare and security. Accordingly, we are in constant liaison with security agencies and other critical stakeholders with a view to ensuring your safety as well as addressing other essential needs for a fulfilling year.
“At all times, you should be good ambassadors of NYSC as well as your families and institutions of graduation. You must be wary of acts that can portray the Scheme in a bad light, especially drug abuse and trafficking, cybercrime and Advanced-Fee-Fraud and spreading of fake news amongst others,” she counselled.
The 1032 corps members made up of 410 males and 622 females registered for national service three weeks ago and had their intensive orientation course under regimentation at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Ikare-Akoko.
