Niger State College Of Education Elevated To University Status

Niger State Governor (L) Mohammed Boga signs a visitors log at the NUC office in Abuja, with Ag Chairman (R) Chirs Maiyaki looking on, as the institution becomes the 270th recognised university in Nigeria.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted approval for the transformation of the Niger State College of Education into the Niger State University of Education.

The Acting Executive Secretary of the NUC, Chris Mayaki, presented the approval letter to Governor Mohammed Umarul Bago in Abuja on Thursday.

Governor Bago acknowledged efforts made over the past decade to bring the transformation to fruition, saying the conversion of the college into a university was driven by the need to address the educational deficit in the state.

He also assured the NUC that funding the university would not pose a challenge, citing the Education Trust Fund law, which mandates that 1% of every state government contract be allocated to the Trust Fund.

Mr. Mayaki pledged the support of the NUC and encouraged the state government to seek professional and technical advice from the Commission to ensure sustainable funding and operation of the university.

The Ag Chairman said other relevant government agencies like the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) would be informed of the new status of the institution.
