NIPOGA 2017: ATAPOLY Bauchi Clinch Gold in Badminton Men’s Event

Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAPOLY) Bauchi on Wednesday clinched gold in the badminton men’s event at the ongoing Nigeria Polytechnic games in Nasarawa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 4,000 athletes are taking part in the 19th edition of the Games taking place at the Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa.

The men’s event saw a total of eight teams participating for the gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.

The teams include ATAPOLY, Kano Poly, Akanu Poly, Nasarawa Poly, Kwara Poly, Esa-Oke Poly, Ado-Ekiti Poly and Kaduna Poly.

ATAPOLY beat Kano Poly in straight sets in their first game and then beat Nasarawa Poly 2-0 in their second game to book a final berth with Kwara Poly.

The finals was also a one-sided affair as the Bauchi-based team dominated the game from start to finish beating the Kwara Poly team in two straight sets, 21-11, 21-11 in 46 minutes to win the event’s gold.

The Kwara poly team which had earlier defeated Esa-Oke Poly 2-0 and Kaduna Poly 2-1 coming into the final game took silver.

Hosts Fed Poly Nasarawa and Kaduna Poly settled for bronze.

NAN also reports that Bida Federal Poly clinched gold in the badminton women’s event, after defeating Fed Poly Ado-Ekiti 2-1 at the end of a pulsating encounter.

Fed Poly Ado-Ekiti took home the silver medal, while Ibadan Poly and Nuhu Bamali Poly and Ibadan Poly settled for bronze.

Results of other games also played today saw Ikorodu Poly defeat Barkin Ladi Poly, in three straights to set up a mouth-watering final encounter with Oko Poly which also earlier thrashed Zaria Poly 3-0 in the Volleyball female event.

Barkin Ladi and Zaria will play the third place match on Thursday.

The games which began on April 29 is expected to end with a closing ceremony on Saturday.
