The National Union of Yobe State Students, (NUYOSS), has groaned over the non-payment of local scholarship bursaries to students by the Yobe State government for about three years.
National President, NUYOSS, Comrade Jalo Kyari Abubakar on behalf of the students, in a statement issued on Saturday, was reacting to the recent State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor, Mai Mala Buni, where over seven million naira was approved and ratified for various developmental projects in the State.
He noted that despite that approval, nothing was earmarked for the payment of local scholarship bursaries to students who are studying in different higher institutions of learning across the country.
“Yobe State local scholarship bursary has not been paid since 2018 and now we are in 2021”, he frowned.
The National President lamented that “During the year 2020, our students have purchased online scholarship forms at the cost of N500, but after submitting their information, nothing is yet heard about it”.
He then called on the government to do the needful by assisting in paying the scholarship to lessen hardships being experienced by students, especially now that transport fare, tuition fees as well as accommodation charges have all skyrocketed.
Comrade Abubakar advised that paying scholarships as and when due should form part of efforts to revamping the education sector of the State.
