24 Schools For Int’l Athletics Championship In Lagos

The Lagos State Athletics Association on Tuesday said that 24 schools would participate in the maiden edition of the International School Sports Championship.

Dayo Alao, Chairman of, Lagos State Athletics Association said at a news conference in Lagos that the competition, organised in conjunction with Sports Business Networks, would take place from March 7 to March 13.

He said that the secondary schools had already booked their places to be part of the event, with some from Ghana and Togo also showing interest.

“In line with the state government’s policy of public-private partnership, we are partnering with the private sector to bring about what we believe will be the biggest gathering of schools.

“The young athletes would come together to showcase their God-given talents and compete so they could be discovered by international scouts,” Alao said.

Similarly, Nigeria’s sensational double Olympic medalist, Enefiok Udo-Ubong, who is the Vice-Chairman Lagos State Athletics Association is confident the event will be a success.

Udo-Ubong, who doubles as the competition director, said that the plartform would provide the youths the opportunity to be discovered and nurtured by international scouts, clubs and colleges.

He said that Jamaica, as a nation, is just 2.7 million people in population, yet their dominance in world Athletics is not matched by any country.

He said that such competitions engineered the success over the years.

Udo-Ubong urged sponsors to key into the competition, as they would be assisting the youth with a platform to fulfil their potential.
