By Feranmi Okuku

The gymnastics coach of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba (AAUA), Mr Joseph Abuo has lamented the poor turnout of students in sporting activities.

In an interview with our correspondent, Mr Abuo said the students are meant to participate in sporting activities.

He said: “We just want students to turn up for sporting activities if not for competition but fitness purpose.”

While reacting to questions surrounding the state of the pitch, the coach pointed out that it would soon be upgraded.

“The pitch is okay because we use it for playing Dean’s cup, VC’s cup and others. Although there are problems they can be solved. The pitch needs a little re-grassing, upgrade of facilities and proper maintenance of equipment which will be done very soon,” he added.

A team captain, Progress Afolabi who is a 200 level student of Geography and Planning Science said that the school hardly provides sporting materials for training.

He maintained that there is “low turnout of students to sporting activities because of lack of encouragement from the school management.”

He added that the school management should wake up to their responsibility.

In the same vein, 100L Roseline Adebori, a student of Health Education pointed out that basic amenities are not available.

“Our lecturers are doing a great job even without the needed equipment. The equipment we have is not balanced.”

“There should be first aid in case of injuries and modern equipment for fast learning but they are not present here,” she said.

Damilola Olubeba, a student in the Department of Health Education opined that the raining season is the reason why the school management is yet to repair the bad facilities.

He urged the school management to commence the repair as soon as the rainy season is over.
