The Students’ Union Electoral Committee, SUEC of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko has set new procedures and date for the conduction of fresh election for new student’s union leaders after the postponement of the election on October 12th, last year.
This was made known in an interview with the Chairman, Students’ Union Electoral Committee, Dr. Stephen Aina.
He stated that the new procedure was propounded to tackle the inaccessibility of students to the election’s e-portal on Election Day as a result of unknown persons who hacked the portal and manipulated the election results. He further expressed that the new procedure is to ensure a free, fair and credible election.
“When the election was initially held, it was a very serious issue for us to observe that the entire site was hacked to the extent that students don’t even have network anywhere to vote. That has not been before because we have already test run the site and it worked effectively.
“Hackers gained access to the site and accessed the students’ ID and voted for their desired candidates. So that makes it so porous that anybody can vote for anybody anytime without the consent of the person, which prompted SUEC to shift the election so that we look for an appropriate time in which we could reschedule our own plans to have a better election,” he said.
Moreover, Dr. Stephen made it clear that the SUEC is still going for the initial E-voting which is going to be controlled internally and there would not be external influence where someone in Lagos or Akure can hack the account of the university and bring in more votes from anywhere.
However, the new date for the SU has been slated for February 5, 2020. The SUEC chairman emphasised that everything has been put in place to ensure hackers are not involved this time around. He also enjoined students who had paid their tuition to come vote with their students’ ID card.
“Qualified students shall be given a pin just like how the CBT exams are conducted in which the students can log in with the pin and the identity of the aspirants will come up from the beginning to the end and you will be able to vote for the candidate of your choice, then submit and go.
“Every financial student of this institution is eligible to vote on that day. What to do is to screen voters with their ID card as students of this university. The election time will come up between 9 0’clock and 4 O’clock so that all the students would be in the school premises we are not taking any external voting this time around because we want a credible election that would be acceptable by all” SUEC chairman said.
