“For Landscape Architecture, the future is bright. It is a growing industry where experts will be required in the not too distant future.”
This much was made known by Mrs. Mimi Ade-Odiachi, the Managing Director, Omar Gardens Flora Company Limited, while speaking on the “Role of Landscape Architecture in Reinforcing Positive Attitudes and Creating a Livable Environment,” at the 12th edition of ARCHIFUS, organised by the Department of Architecture, Covenant University, Ota on Wednesday, March 21, 2018.

The event which doubled as the 3rd Town and Gown Seminar series of the department in the current semester has “Advocacy by Design” as its theme.
Mrs. Ade-Odiachi, a trained Insurer who through passion veered into Landscape Architecture, noted that despite high-level ignorance about the profession, it adds value to property and environment.
“Landscape Architects are required for parks, schools, stadia, streets, churches and mosque among others. Having a garden increases the value of your property. Studies have shown that people are willing to pay more for a property view with nature,” she explained.
Landscape Architecture, she said, has a significant impact on the environment that helps define a community and how they interact with each other. She emphasised that a Landscape Architect has to understand design, plants, soil as well as construction and how they could all work functionally together to create a beautiful space.
The guest speaker advised participants, particularly the students to consciously add landscaping to their various projects, which, according to her, would make them stand out among other professionals.

She also advised them to develop a problem-solving attitude and be resourceful. “Things will not always happen on site as planned on paper. You still have to be able to think on your feet. And in spite of everything, you have to create a beautiful and wonderful landscape.”
In his remarks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shalom Chinedu, who stood in for the Vice-Chancellor, Professor AAA. Atayero, appreciated the contributions of staff and students of the department to the development of the University and its proprietor base.
He noted that the department is one that the leadership and the management of the University are proud of, noting that most of the buildings in the Commission and the University were designed by the department.” He then declared the event open.
The Dean, College of Science and Technology, Professor Kolawole Ajanaku, also appreciated both faculty and staff of the department, as he enjoined them to continue to work together in order to change the nation.
The Head, Department of Architecture, Dr. Oluwole Alagbe, explained that ARCHIFUS was a brain-child of the students in the department which sought to ensure interaction between classroom knowledge and what obtains in the industry. He added that it was a platform where students interact and network, which has improved their studies and careers. He also promised that the department would not rest on its oars.
