The NYSC Ondo State Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani has appealed to corps members engaging in sporting activities to avail themselves of routine medical check-ups to determine their present state of fitness.
The State Coordinator who is an incurable sports enthusiast made the appeal during the finals of Football and Volleyball competitions held to bring to climax the sporting activities for the 2021 Batch ‘B’ (Stream 1) orientation course.
Mrs. Ani is worried that corps members who have access to quality health services during the orientation course and in the course of the service year hardly avail themselves of such opportunities.
“My dear children in the national service, I need not tell you that we have enhanced medical facilities to cater for the welfare needs of the corps members during the orientation course and in the course of the service year but sadly enough, you hardly take advantage of this welfare provision but rather assume all is well”.
You will recall that some years back, NYSC in her wisdom introduced a good idea which made it compulsory for all orientation camps nationwide to retain the services of a resident medical consultant from Federal Health tertiary institutions”.
“This move, according to a memorandum of understanding signed between NYSC management and Ministry of Health is to make the services of qualified, experienced and thoroughbred medical professionals available to the restive and mobile graduate youths. Since then, the proficiency of these medical practitioners has never been in doubt or their assessment of any situation queried” she said.
The NYSC Ondo State boss who is known to dish out instructions from her seat in the covered sporting arena as an honorary football coach during matches asserted that NYSC has the ability and capacity to produce the best for Nigeria in sporting activities globally.
“My children, do not despise the little beginning. Notable Nigerians like midfield maestro, Adokiye Amiesimaka and many others made the country proud during their NYSC service year. The Scheme will launch you into stardom if you continue with this commitment”.
Mrs. Ani bemoaned the dearth of sponsors for sporting activities in camp and called on sports philanthropists in the society to ‘come over to the NYSC in Sunshine State to come and help us’.
“NYSC is making waves in all her programmes, events and activities in spite of the very tight fiscal policy, and this is why we are calling on Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora to make available their resources for us to groom these promising children to become the Christian Chukwus, Segun Odegbamis, Mary Onyalis, Innocent Egbunikes, Blessing Okagbares, Chioma Ajunwas and the likes” she concluded.
The Head, Sports Committee, Otunba Olawuyi Lasisi promised the State Coordinator that the talents discovered during the sporting activities would be groomed and monitored for future competitions.
Otunba Lasisi who is the Assistant Director/Head of, Sports who is known for no-nonsense disposition said that the corps members played with a high sense of responsibility and displayed a true sense of sportsmanship throughout the days the programme lasted.
The colourful and entertaining event which attracted a large gathering had platoon number 3 coasting home as winners in football. The outstanding efforts of number 5 and 7 platoons earned them second and third positions respectively.
In Volleyball, the superlative display of mastery of technical competence, professionalism and dexterity by the number 8 platoon gave them the first position while number 4 platoon with their gallantry succeeded in clinching the second place, and number 5 platoon got consolatory third place for their bravery.
