Most Early Childhood Teachers, Not Trained – Stakeholders

Some stakeholders in the education sector, including the Director-General, Office of the Education Quality Assurance, Lagos State, Mrs Abiola Seriki-Ayeni and executives of the World Organisation for Early Childhood Education  (OMEP), have said most early childhood education teachers are not trained.

Seriki-Ayeni who spoke at the three-day continuous professional development training for educators, organised by OMEP, said parents did not see the value in an early childhood education as they preferred the jelosinmi (local crèche).

She also encouraged interested educators to join the association.

“Generally speaking as it is everywhere, we don’t have enough awareness on the importance of early childhood education. The challenge is the mindset. Parents are also not really seeing the value in the early childhood education system. So, we will need more sensitisation to let people know that they should support such initiatives and they should ensure that their children are in such early childhood education centre instead of being at home.”

National president, OMEP, Mrs Olatokunbo Doherty, said it was important for educators of early childhood to get quality training as it would assist them to give children a quality education foundation.

“We still need to groom a set of people for this early childhood educational system, it is very important and the government has to invest in it even the private practitioners have to invest in the right manner for those who run nursery schools and make sure they do it right because that’s a foundation for education. You need to equip the child particularly the first seven years are very crucial in their life and once they miss it, it is never the same. You will find out that it is very important we go through the process, it is not a process you jump over/skip.”

National secretary, OMEP, Mrs Oyindamola Sonola, maintained that the organisation was focused on research, continuous development, creating awareness and involving parents to ensure that every child’s had access to standard education.
