On Sunday, May 28, 2023, the Electoral Committee (ELCOM) appointed by the management of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) for the forthcoming Student Union elections held a meeting with all student leaders at the PTF lecture hall, where the chairperson of the committee, Mallam Bashir Mohammed Achida, maintained that any contestant who campaigns before the committee makes an official declaration will be disqualified from participating in the coming election.

According to the chairperson, the ban on campaigning for SU positions has not been lifted.

Recall that on Monday, May 15, 2023, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof Umar Aliyu, appointed a thirteen-person electoral committee, comprising lecturers and students, to supervise the conduct of the SU elections for the 2022/2023 academic session.

In attendance at the meeting were Campus Journalists, a representative of the Chief Security Officer (CSO), members of the ELCOM, campus TVs, and representatives of clubs, Faculties and state associations operating within the university.

The ELCOM chairman said, “We are aware that some students have started campaigning by creating groups, sharing fliers or any other form of campaign. Tell them to bring those fliers down and stop further campaigns until the ban on campaigns will be lifted.”

He added that campaigning in all manners is forbidden and ordered that those that have printed their banners or posters should keep them out of sight until the said ban is lifted.

“The law is there. I will not talk about what does not exist. If we start taking action, it will be louder. Inform those people to quickly withdraw those posters,” he warned.

The ELCOM chairman also stated that anyone caught campaigning will never contest in the forthcoming elections, and likewise subsequent ones.

“If they are members of anybody in this university, we will make sure that they are relieved from that position. Please be warned and have patience until we give further directives,” he concluded.
