Don Advocates Solution Journalism In Curriculum

A lecturer at the Fountain University, Osogbo, Dr Rasheed Adebiyi, has called for a review of the Mass Communication curriculum to incorporate the term, ‘Solution Journalism.’

According to him, rather than focusing on the problem, ‘Solution Journalism’ as a concept focuses on providing solutions.

Adebiyi disclosed this while speaking at a day workshop for media practitioners and Mass Communication students with the theme, ‘Mainstreaming solutions journalism teaching and practice in the media ecosystem in Osun State, southwest Nigeria,’ held at Fountain University, Osogbo.

The communication scholar, who was the convener of the workshop said, “the narrative has also always been one-sided. We focus on the problem, more than on how people are responding to the problem.

“We should begin to change our perspective, the way we teach journalists in the classroom. The ‘bad new is news’ focus is already out of date even in advanced countries.

“They are now taking a solution driven-approach to report. We are telling the department of Mass Communication to adopt that philosophy. It may not be a stand-alone course but it could be incorporated into similar courses.”
